Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). Is That a Thing?

Are you too connected to social media? Did you know there was a thing called FoMO or fear of missing out syndrome? Fear of missing out. ... Fear of missing out or FoMO is "a pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent". This social angst is characterized by "a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing". In our fast paced, digital world we live in, it is almost impossible to escape social media, the internet or smart phones. We use it at work and our personal lives. Even some churches are using social media. Also, fear of missing out can creep its head up in non-digital ways such as having to have the latest product, see the latest concert, or experience the latest adventure. So, how do you manage a fear of missing out?

As a personal coach, one of the areas I coach people on is staying focused on what matters the most. I help people maintain the mantra, “The main thing, is to keep the main thing, the main thing.”

Remind yourself that nobody's life is perfect, even if it looks that way when you see all the great things they are doing.

Let go of comparisons that stir up anxiety for you. Instead, focus on what you want from life.

Don't miss out on what's in front of you for fear of missing out on what other people are raving about.

You can't have it all. You have to say no to some things in order to say a meaningful yes to others.

Relax, enjoy and appreciate what you do have instead of always looking at what others have and feeling bad about yourself.
